The Amazing Ben

Yesterday was a studio day. So class went from one to five, and we sketched ideas most of the time. I lose concentration after a while though and my mind wanders.... The professor has to know that that will happen though with a class that is four hours long.

After class all of the Auburn students were invited to go watch cheer leading practice. That sounds strange, but there was a good reason we were invited. Some of the Auburn guys live with a Taiwanese student named Ben who is on the team. Last night was his last practice and he wanted us to come watch him and his team cheer. He's a really nice guy and fit into the group so easily.

Everyone was getting ready to head over to the practice, then Ben called with bad news. The boys couldn't go to practice because the cheerleaders practice at the top of the girls dorm, and boys are not allowed in. This was strange to me because when I went to go watch Ben practice, I saw guys other than the cheerleaders hanging out in the dorm. When I talked to Ben he told me that the lady working the desk specifically told him that because our guys were American, they couldn't come up. It was really disappointing to hear that, and I am sure something could have been done if the lady understood the circumstances better. This was Ben's last practice, he is leaving the next day, and he just wants to dance in front of his new friends. How is that a bad thing. It's not like our guys would come in and harass the Taiwanese girls.

Ben's practice was fun to watch. He kept on bringing over his teammates and introducing them to us. They didn't really speak English, so it was a bunch of smiles and long silences.

After the practice we met back up with Ben and ate seafood outside by the track and talked. Ben is leaving today for Taipei, but he convinced his parents to let him come back for part of the summer so he could hang out with all of us.
